Design and Tactical Notes

The Locust is shaped like a triangle-base pyramid, the same shape as a four sided die. It stands approximately 12 feet high, from base to tip.

At each of the four "points" of the pyramid is a rocket, pointing straight out from the centre of the craft. As a result, when landed, the ship sits upon three of its rockets. Each rocket is a cylinder about two feet wide and extending about three feet from the ship.

This design gives the Locust true omnidirectional movement capabilities. At any given moment, a Locust can move up, down, left, right, forward, backward, or any combination thereof, without needing to turn. In fact, the Locust cannot turn on any of its axes, and retains its relative orientation to other objects while moving.

Though this allows the ship extreme maneuverability, a large portion of the time this requires part of the engines' thrusts to actually be directly working against that of another engine. As a result, the Locust consumes an unusual amount of fuel.

The Locust has four laser cannon turrets, one mounted in the centre of each of its four faces. Each gun has both a primary and a secondary firing mode. The primary mode simply releases an extremely powerful energy blast. The secondary mode uses vibrationally displaced energy that moves unstoppably through energy and matter, thus allowing it to cut through shields and armour, but this reduces the actual damage it does.

The four guns may all be fired simultaneously. However, their positioning makes it impossible for them to all aim at the same target (unless the entire ship is engulfed by its target). At most three guns can be fired at any given target at any one time, assuming the pilot is able to move the Locust to an optimal firing position. However, if the enemy is able to position itself correctly, it can move to a spot where only one gun can possibly fire at it, though at least one gun will always be able to fire at a target (unless, of course, there is something in the way of the shot).

The Locust lacks any force field or armour protection, and its high onboard fuel supply makes it extremely volatile. A single direct hit will usually incapacitate or destroy it. Additionally, the lack of any cushioning means that the pilot will be thrown about a bit if the Locust is hit, possibly incurring minor injuries.

The Mk 2 Locust includes an ejection mechanism, its sole improvement over the Mk 1. Unfortunately, should the ship blow up, even if the pilot ejects in time, he will still be well within the blast radius of the explosion, but may be lucky and/or hardy enough to live through it anyway; certainly the odds of survival are far higher outside the exploding ship than in. It is worth noting that the Locust does not contain an escape pod of any sort; Locust pilots wishing to use this feature must wear a spacesuit inside the ship.

The Locust is a short range fighter, designed to be deployed in space from larger vessels. As such, it has neither atmospheric nor interstellar capabilities.
